SUSTAINABILITY

What is FSC®-Certification?

The Forest Stewardship Council, FSC®, was formed in 1993 with the mission to promote environmentally sound, socially beneficial and economically prosperous management of the world’s forests. Their vision is to meet current needs for forest products without compromising the health of those ecosystems for future generations. Today, more than 380 million acres of forest have been independently certified, carrying the FSC® label on their products.

Jensen Outdoor (FSC® C013910) is FSC®-Certified because its forests are inspected and certified against strict standards based on FSC’s 10 Principles of Forest Stewardship. These inspections are undertaken by independent organizations, such as the Soil Association, that are accredited by the FSC. In order to be given FSC certification a forest must be managed in an environmentally appropriate, socially beneficial and economically viable manner. This is what makes the FSC system unique and ensures that a forest is well-managed from the protection of indigenous people’s rights to the methods of felling trees. Forests that meet these strict standards are given FSC certification and the timber allowed to carry the FSC label.

How are your materials sourced?

Since 1995, Jensen Outdoor has been a leader in the outdoor furniture industry by receiving one of the first, and annually recertified, accreditations from the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC®) for our small footprint harvesting techniques. This level of care through sustainable forest-management provides protection for more than 2 million acres of Bolivian forests alone. Renowned as the gold standard in forestry certification, FSC® has established strict environmental and social standards for responsible forest management and harvesting practices, only accrediting such organizations who share this dedication.

Today, the luxury furniture crafted by Jensen Outdoor exclusively features FSC®-Certified timbers. As a result, every piece of Jensen Outdoor wood furniture directly preserves millions of acres of dry tropical forests, along with the welfare of workers and their families, for generations to come.

How does my purchase directly protect the forest?

By purchasing Jensen Outdoor you are directly supporting the longevity of the forests we manage. Jensen Outdoor adds value to these natural resources, through creative furniture design and manufacturing techniques; but we wouldn’t be able to add any value if our forests disappeared. That is why our small-footprint harvesting techniques only select the century-old mature Ipe trees, leaving the younger and more fertile trees to replenish the forest before our next harvest.

Jensen Outdoor has made an FSC®-Certified plan to rotate which areas of the forest are harvested every season. This ensures that the same plot of forest is not touched again before thirty years have passed, allowing new batches of mature Ipe trees to grow, contributing to forest diversity.

Our Ipe wood is heirloom-durable. Rest comfortably in the knowledge you can pass down your Jensen Outdoor furniture to the next generation. As trends change, feel confident knowing that when your children’s-children have backyards of their own Jensen Outdoor will be there making new, stylish and sustainable, wood furniture.

Our commitment to preserving our forests makes choosing Jensen Outdoor for your leisure spaces a decision to be proud of.

PRODUCT CARE

How well does Ipe wood stand up to being left outside?

Ipe timber exhibits a deep chocolate-brown grain when new that may be allowed to naturally age to an elegant silver patina or brought back to an as new finish at any time.

Jensen Outdoor’s Ipe furniture comes pre-stained with Penofin Verde oil which protects and conditions the wood to prevent absorption of moisture, cracking and drying while allowing the wood to naturally gray over time.

Although Ipe is naturally stable, small checks in the surface (minuscule openings of the wood grain at the ends) may appear if the furniture is placed in a very dry or sunny environment. Superficial checking in no way affects the structural integrity and longevity of the furniture and will in fact disappear when the environment becomes moist.

Can I let my Ipe Wood furniture go gray?

Absolutely, many of our customers prefer the ease and elegance of allowing their Ipe Wood furniture to age to a noble silver patina with time.

The remarkable resilience of Ipe wood provides protection from damage, scuffing, cracking and warping due to weather, wear, and time. Jensen Outdoor’s Ipe timber exhibits a deep chocolate-brown grain when new that may be allowed to naturally age to an elegant silver patina or brought back to an ‘as new’ finish at any time. With proper care and maintenance, the strength, color and beauty of Ipe wood can be enjoyed for a lifetime.

How do I restore my Ipe Wood furniture to an ‘as new’ finish after it goes gray?

Restore The Deep Chocolate-Brown ‘As New’ Finish:

Ipe naturally develops an elegant silver patina over time when exposed to the elements. To restore the ‘as new’ chocolate brown finish of Ipe wood, follow our simple color-restoration process:

  • To prepare Ipe for a UV-protective coat of Penofin® Verde Oil Finish, use Penofin® Pro-Tech Wood Cleaner to remove surface dirt, then rinse off with water.
  • To brighten and re-establish the pH balance of Ipe wood to best accept the Penofin® Verde Oil Finish, use Penofin® Pro-Tech Wood Brightener, then rinse off with water and allow to dry completely.
  • Apply Penofin® Verde Oil Finish as directed on the can, letting it penetrate for 30 minutes.
  • To remove excess oil finish that hasn’t been absorbed by the wood, rub the Ipe surface with smooth rags until dry to the touch. IMPORTANT: Dispose of rags in a metal bucket of water to avoid spontaneous combustion.
  • After completely dry, apply Wood Shield to timber to provide additional protection against water and food stains.
